John Brett Sovern

John Brett Sovern, 41, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, April 27, 2021.

Survivors include his sister, Lindsey (Matthew) Sovern Urbanek of Overland Park, Kan. His parents, Larry and Barbara Sovern of
Marion, Iowa; nephews, Gray and Sylas Urbanek; an uncle,
Chuck Gaskill of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; cousins,
Matthew Gaskill and Lauren (Tommy) Ehinger; an
uncle, Jerry Falck of Decorah, Iowa; as well as Sovern
Family, Colfer Family and Rhodes Family cousins.
He was preceded in death by his uncle, John
Polulach; an aunt, Susan Gaskill; aunt, Marilyn
Streetman; and grandparents, John and Jean Polulach
and Charles and Dorothy Sovern.
Brett was born June 15, 1979, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Larry and Barbara Sovern. He graduated from
Washington High School and attended Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where he was a member of
Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He received a degree in culinary arts and hospitality management from Sinclair
College. Brett’s passion for creating innovative menus enabled him to work at many fine dining restaurants in
Tampa Bay and surrounding coastal communities. Brett owned and operated his own company, Dinnervention
Catering and created a custom spice line, Blend Perfections. His career was highlighted by executive
chef roles and recognition by local media. Like his dad, Brett enjoyed fishing, running, golf and the Florida sun.

    Barbara and Larry, my heart goes out to both of you and Lindsay. I remember Brett from earlier days in grammar and middle school when he and Patrick spent so much time together, having so much fun. Wonderful happy times.     Larry, Barbara & Lindsay, Roger & I have no words to express to you how deep our heart aches for all of you. Brett was a truly wonderful & talented man. He was taken from you way too early and we can’t imagine the heartbreak you are all feeling right now. Please know we are here for all of you & if you need anything please call us.
