Sharon “Mort” Morten

Sharon “Mort” Morten

May 17, 1945 ~ May 30, 2020

Sharon Jo “Mort” Morten passed from this life on May 30, 2020. Born in Alton, IL, on May 17, 1945, to Edith and Ervin Morten, she was the eighth of nine children. She is survived by brother, John Morten, ND; sisters, Delores Morten, MN, and Linda Rote (Jeff), NC; brother-in-law, Robert Felling, AZ; sister-in-law, Audrey Morten, ID; and many nieces and nephews. After graduating from the University of South Florida, she began her teaching career at Largo High School. During her career in teaching, she also served as a counselor and as a Child Advocacy Coordinator with the Guardian ad Litem program. Of all the awards she received during her career, the honor she treasured most was the love and respect of her students, clients and colleagues, all of whom she considered her family. She wrote, “Love describes my philosophy. The most beautiful experience for us is the acceptance that we extend to each other.” Her greatest hope was that her friends and family would carry this message of unconditional love and acceptance throughout their lives. Due to the current pandemic, a gathering to celebrate her life will not be held at this time

Such sad news. I saw Miss Mort many years ago while I was working as a paramedic at St Pete. She called us to check on one of “her kids” that she was advocating for. She recognized me immediately and gave me a big hug! Such a nice lady that made a big difference for all of “her” kids. I was in LHS class of 1977.

Sadness takes over to learn of the passing of a great teacher – of life – of love and of acceptance. The originator of the ‘warm fuzzy’, Mort made these yarn balls of color and gave them out freely for us to share with each other as a show of love. I remember giving mine to her … RIP Mort, a better example of humanity and humility cannot be matched.

Sharon and I met when I was 15 and she 17. We taught for many years together at LHS and played practical jokes on each other many times. She came to my room in B-wing and squirted me with water one day. The next day I had students tear newspapers in small pieces and fill a bucket. I entered her room, pretending the bucket was heavy with water, rushed over to her and let it fly. Everyone thought it was water and squealed, and then everyone laughed. She never tried to one-up me again. We were great friends.

I was so blessed to have Mort as my teacher for human relations. She changed my life, taught me about authenticity, confidence, strike and so much more she was so approachable and so supportive how many people! She’s probably the first real authentic person I truly met. So many of us will remember her fondly. I am keeping you all in my heart and prayers. Rest in peace Beautiful Soul.

It’s something else to hear all of these wonderful things about my Aunt. I only met Sharon a handful of times in my life. Geography got in the way. I know my dad respected and loved her though. I love being able to learn new things about a family member. susie overdorf …yes, my mom confirms that she went to high school at Dixie Hollins. RIP Aunt Sharon….

Mort touched all of us in a way that insisted you better and do better. One of the best moments was when she attended our 40th Reunion. It was like going into the past. Her infectious smile and laugh was still there, I don’t think she had a moment to herself with everybody stopping for a hug or just her smile. We will all miss you Mort and I look forward to our next reunion.

Sharon Morten was a classmate of mine in Larimore, North Dakota. She was my partner in chemisty lab. When she moved I lost contact. I am happy to know that God has blessed her life and has made her a blessing to so many. I look forward to the day when when I meet with Jesus and Sharon.

Sharon cared so much for all of us at LHS…staff and students. Hugs and smiles were required, but if you needed a reprimand, she was there, too. I taught with Mort for many years, and thought she was almost immortal because of the influence she had on us all. I wish I had not lost contact with her after I retired, but I will never forget how she related to all of us. Remember how she brought jail prisoners to the library to meet with her students, and how they reacted when one of the prisoners got in his/her face to say,”You don’t want to be here?” She wanted us all to be better, and I know I was a better teacher because of Mort. Thanks, Mort, and rest in peace.

I worked at the Guardian ad Litem Program with Sharon. She was always smiling and so friendly. I always wished that I had asked her if I could go on a visit with her to one of her teens. I always heard how she was magical with them. After reading all of these tributes to her, I regret that even more. Sharon, most people get their wings when they pass on; you got yours here on earth. May you rest in the arms of Jesus. Well maybe He has bigger plans for you. Thank you for who you were and are. P.S. Now I have to read “The Velvet Rabbit.”

Her passing reminds me of what a truly exceptional teacher she was – Mort stood out as an educator that you’d think of with fondness for the rest of your life. And I do think of her often – ah, so many years later. My warm condolences to her family – please know she was loved by many.

As I read the kind words of her former students, who are now adults, we know the power of love through her caring relationshis she built in and outside the classroom. Her legacy will live on through these kind and loving adults. Blessings and love is extended to her family around the world. Thank you for being a great teacher to all.

Sharon was an outstanding Guardian Ad Litem, a true advocate for all kids, some of whom were taller than “Mort” but all whom loved and respected her. The judges and court personnel treasured her service and wise advice. Judge Ulmer even carved her a wooden cane which she used as a staff to give her even more power. She was wonderful. Look at all the condolences from former students! Bless her life. Irene Sullivan, retired juvenile judge.

I was so saddened to hear that Mort had left us. I have fond memories of her Human Relations class at Largo. We all sat around on bean bag chairs and talked about life and ideas. She was such a great example of nonjudgemental warmth. As a very tightly-wound teenager I found her approach startling at first, but I quickly realized what a boon it was to me and to my fellow students. I am so glad that I was able to briefly reconnect with her via Facebook a few years ago. She was very special and will be missed.

I just saw this. I so remember this remarkable teacher with boundless enthusiasm and always, always a smile. She had a positive outlook towards her students when other teachers did not. There are some wonderful teachers from all grade levels I will never forget. She is one of them.
