David Viswat

Obituary of David Henry Viswat

David Henry Viswat, 77, of Traverse City, Michigan passed away suddenly on March 9, 2024 while on vacation with his loving wife Susan Viswat. David was doing what he loved, swimming in the gulf, reading his books on the beach, and working on that perfect tan. He was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his passing.

David was born on August 18, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan to Henry and Betty (Duckett) Viswat, who preceded him in death. David met the love of his life, Susan, at age 15 while attending Franklin High School (graduating class of 1964) in Livonia, Michigan. They have been together ever since.

David is survived by his wife of 55 years Susan (Black) Viswat, daughters Katy Viswat, Amy Viswat McKean, son-in-law Daniel McKean, and his grandchildren Julia Rae and Henry David McKean. He is also survived by his three sisters, Carol Richardson, Linda Viswat, and Suzie Viswat, as well as his brother and sister in-law, Bill and Lynn Black and many nieces and nephews.

David’s love of music, specifically piano, began at Motown in Detroit, Michigan as a teen playing with The Continentals. He continued to hone his skills playing in various bands with incredible musicians throughout his life. Most recently, David was playing with the Dune Brothers with a group of guys he greatly admired and respected. He was happiest sitting behind his piano sharing his gift. David was a bigger than life personality, when he walked into a room his presence was felt immediately. He had the incredible gift of making everyone he encountered and talked to feel as if they were the most important person in the world.

David also made a huge impact on his community. Working for Elmer’s Crane and Dozer for over 30 years, he made relationships that would last his lifetime. There wasn’t a place David could go without knowing someone.

David was an incredible husband, father, grandfather (Papa), coach, and friend. He loved his family deeply and they loved him. The love he had for his wife Susan is immeasurable, you can hardly think of one without the other. When he spoke of his daughters and grandchildren you could see the pride and love written all over his face. He loved spending time together as a family; watching his beloved Wolverines (Go Blue!) and boating on Grand Traverse Bay. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of life will be held at The Lake Ann Brewery on April 6, 2024 in Lake Ann, Michigan from 12-5pm. This will be a casual day to celebrate David’s life and music.
